Air Conditioning System Inspection

Air conditioning systems can account for 50%  of the energy used in  most  buildings. Energy Assessors are here to help you comply with aspect of EPBD and the new Energy  Performance of Buildings Regulations.
The aim of the inspection:

  • Provided the building owners/operators with information about system performance
  • Identify where reduction in CO2 can be achieved as well as reducing energy consumption and saving money

The report will highlight measures which, if acted upon will improve energy consumption and save money within a reasonable payback period.  The EPC will be valid for five years, after which the system will require another inspection.

Does my system require inspection?

An air conditioning system is “a combination of all the components required to provide a form of air treatment in which the temperature is controlled or can be lowered, and includes systems which combine such air treatment with the control of ventilation, humidity and air cleanliness.”  The government has decided to introduce the new regulations in two phases.

  • Phase 1  - Applies to those systems with a rated cooling  capacity above 250 kW.
  • Phase 2 – Applies to those systems with a rated cooling capacity above 12 Kw.

The cooling capacity of an air conditioning ‘system’ is further defined as “the sum of all individual cooling units under the control of one building owner or operator.”

When does this happen?

  • First inspection of all current systems over 250Kw cooling capacity must be completed by January  4th, 2009.
  • First inspection of all existing systems over 12 Kw must be completed by 4th January 2011
  • New systems over 12 Kw installed after January 2008 must be inspected within 5 years after being put into service

All our  Inspectors  our inspectors are fully qualified and  insured to undertake air conditioning inspections.
It is advised that consideration be given to carrying out the inspection at the same time as maintenance and F-Gas inspections. This will reduced the cost of the inspection.

Please Note

New R22 air conditioning units will no longer be available. The fact that recycled R22 can be used for a few more years is both costly and in the case of the drop in refrigerants would probably result in a lack of performance and efficiency.

In short heat pump air conditioning is significantly more energy efficient means of heating an area. With upwards of 3 times the heat energy output compared to the electrical energy output.
